The research

Project Overview

  1. The stakes

Entrepreneurship matters for Africa! As a reminder, over the next two decades, the continent will have to create nearly 20 million jobs every year to cope with the entry into the labor market of nearly 435 million young people. Developing strong entrepreneurial ecosystems therefore represents a promising opportunity to boost self employment opportunities and higher youth employment.

2. Project objectives

This is why the the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) launched a research project titled "Bettering Entrepreneurial Training in Africa" or BETAF, aimed at improving entrepreneurial practices in a very specific field: entrepreneurial education.

With the support of the Mastercard Foundation, the project aims at identifying the skills, teaching techniques and support activities capable of accelerating African graduates' entrepreneurial trajectories.

3. The research protocol

More About the Research

To achieve those objectives and in strict compliance with ethical standards and the protection of personal data, the research team involved key African academic institutions to the research protocol as associated academic institutions and member of the control group.

Through questionnaires administered to AIMS-Sciences Po alumni and graduates from other African institutions in five African countries (Cameroon, Ghana, Senegal, South Africa and Rwanda), the research team is expected to identify those best and new practices capable of fostering entrepreneurial education and entrepreneurship on the continent.

Beyond those institutions, the research aims at mainstreaming its learnings to other academic institutions and decision makers in Africa, with the objectives to bolster entrepreneurship among students and increase not only their likelihood to start entrepreneurial ventures but also to succeed and create more jobs.

Hence the publication of detailed reports at the end of the research process to provide recommandations capable of improving curricula and pro entrepreneurial activities in academic institutions but also national entrepreneurial education policies.

All in all, the research, its advocacy work and its recommendations aims at creating entrepreneurs capable of meeting the challenges of African structural transformation by 2050.
